The Crape Myrtle is a traditional and gorgeous highlight of any Southern landscape. Now available in more colors and styles than every before, here are a few easy tips to help your crapes thrive despite the summer heat!

  • If you haven’t yet fertilized your Crapes for the summer growing season, do so now. Our experts recommend Fertilome Gardeners Special.
  • Leaves that are dark and sooty or charcoal gray probably have powdery mildew – it is a common problem with Crape Myrtles. Fertilome Systemic Disease Control is a great way to combat this.
  • Resist the urge to prune your crape myrtles now (except to remove any dead or diseased branches). The best time to trim them is late winter or early spring.
  • Keep suckers removed from the base and lower limb area, so all nutrients flow directly to the main crape base where they’re needed!
  • Aphids can be a problem on Crapes, as they invade the tender new growth shoots in early summer. If you spot them, use Fertilome Tree & Shrub Insecticide Drench. It’s effective and so easy – just follow the directions to apply the concentrate with a little water in a watering can and apply it directly to the base so it will flow straight down to the roots.
