When summer ends, it’s natural for some people to feel that the best gardening season of the year has come to a close, leaving their window boxes looking rather drab and sad.
But there’s no reason to give up on those boxes, which are a very simple way to beautify your home. The best thing about them? They’re low-maintenance and very affordable, plus when you have all those amazing plants around the house, it just can’t help but put a smile on your face.
There are plenty of gorgeous plants that turn those window boxes into beautiful autumn masterpieces, and I’m not just talking about sunflowers and mums. For instance, flowering kale and other greens grow extremely well in the fall and these striking plants can make your boxes look great for several more months.
Simply remove the dead summer flowers from your window boxes and add several ornamental kale and cabbage plants and adorn them with the masses of Pansies & Violas below to provide the colors you prefer to compliment your home and other ornamentals chosen.  You can fill in the rest of the box with some mums if you like, and maybe some tiny squash and pumpkins, for a beautiful look that will take you to all the way into December.
Ornamental kales can be spikey and eye-catching, while decorative cabbages and other greens are generally bold and happy-looking plants.  Those Pansies & Violas will provide the eye catching color to fill in the boxes with a mass of color & contrast. They can definitely make those cool fall days seem a little warmer.
Kales come in a variety of shades and colors, from white to pink to red and a deep purple, all definitely attention-getters, along with some lovely sagey greens.  The bright inner colors make a wonderful contrast with the soft green outer layers and instantly add charm and appeal to the outside of your home. Violas are a great choice for those fall & winter containers as they provide additional cold hardiness over their Pansy cousins.
Another great thing about kales and flowering cabbages? When the weather does start turning colder, their colors only deepen and are even bolder. And while most of us tend to look harshly on them because it means that winter is right around the corner, a good frost can make the hues even more striking.
So, don’t give up on those window boxes when summer ends. Grab some kale and other green plants and get busy… you’ll be able to enjoy their incredible splendor the rest of the year!
