Aerating the Lawn – It’s the Green Thing to Do

This is a great time to aerate your lawn.  It helps to prepare your grass for a great growing season next spring and after all the destructive weather mayhem THIS year, you’re going to want to give your lawn every break you can!

One of the best yard drainage solutions available is core aeration. Aerating punches holes in the lawn and adds air pockets. This will help improve air and water circulation.

Another benefit is that, since this is still a great time to sprinkle on some grass seed, aerating increases the seeds’ germination since some of the seed falls in the holes you just made. And don’t forget to spread Step 4 Winterizer Lawn Food all at the same time. If this is your first time for Winterizer, you will be shocked how much better your lawn looks all winter and especially with the arrival of the first mild spell in March!!

Using a spike aerator, you can easily poke holes into the ground with a solid tine, or fork. Plug aerators remove a core or plug of grass and soil from the lawn.  We highly recommend plug/core aeration as our pros’ personal choice.

You can help the tines penetrate deeper by watering your lawn one to two days prior to aerating. While you’re aerating, apply some fast-acting lime to “green up” the grass next year by adjusting the pH balance.
