There are certain specific steps our experts here at EJC take to ensure a successful planting! Whether it is trees, shrubs or perennials or all of the above, some particular soil additives and a few expert tips can really make a difference when it comes to helping your plantings thrive!
- Check the planting tab that comes with your tree/shrub/perennial for the correct depth at which to plant. Many folks just dig a hole and drop it in, but depth can make a big difference.
- To make our clay soil more plant-friendly, dig the hole a little deeper than required and put some good quality soil in the bottom. Once the roots are in place, fill in with same quality soil. We recommend using equal parts of the original soil mixed in with Daddy Pete’s Composted Cow Manure. The half and half mixture makes for really good quality soil!
- If planting on a level area or an area that drains poorly, lift the tree/shrub soil mass higher than the original soil level and cover this elevated root mass with the above created soil mixture. As always, apply Fertilome Root Stimulator weekly for several weeks to help the roots quickly grow into this new soil mixture.
- Pay close attention to the sun/shade requirements. Consider, too, the size of the plant or tree when fully grown and whether the spot you choose will still be able to provide adequate sunlight or shade.
